Hi! My name is Jan and I am a Certified Pilates Instructor. I began my Pilates journey as a reluctant student of Pilates. How can lying or standing on a mat be a hard workout? Well, I soon found out it is a low impact yet highly intense workout! At my first Pilates class, I was flowing from one exercise to the next trying to remember to tighten my abs, keeping my arms pencil straight while maintaining neutral spine, relaxed at the shoulders AND to breath! I quickly realized that I was in the right class with the wrong mindset. Pilates is hard and is unlike any exercise I had ever experienced.
I came from a long distance, interval, kick boxing background. Unless I was jumping up and down with flushed red cheeks in a downpour of sweat, I was not working out and not working out hard enough. However, when I was expecting with my first son, I knew I had to replace my former exercise routine and decided to try Pilates. The more I did it, the more I wanted to do Pilates because of what it did for me. I felt stronger, more flexible, and balanced and all of this without the side effects from the high impact exercises I used to do such as chronic low back pain, knee pain, or foot injuries. Soon I realized that Pilates is an exercise that I can do now and tomorrow and into my golden years. Unlike my long distance running or kickboxing exercises, Pilates is an exercise that met me where I was physically and would continually meet me into my senior years!
The other benefit I found with Pilates is that I did not need to go to the chiropractor or physical therapist as often. My chronic back, joint, and foot issues were quickly resolved through Pilates. The slow, flowing exercises made me more strong from head to toe and my muscle strength was balanced. With my former days of kickboxing, I was strong largely in my legs, however, not so strong in my mid-back or neck. But with Pilates, I was strong everywhere: my large muscles as well my superficial muscles. Not one muscle escapes the reach of a Pilates workout.
The transformative benefits I experienced from Pilates motivated me to become a Pilates instructor. I wanted others to experience the same benefits. Pilates is a highly precise and controlled exercise and receiving instruction from a Certified Pilates Instructor is critical.
I am so glad that I discovered Pilates and became a Certified Pilates Instructor! I love what is has done for me and for those around me and my students! The exercises makes sense to me and I love helping people through Pilates!
